ALCOVE

An architectural term referring to the recess in a room. Most common were the bed alcoves in Pompeiian rooms which were common in northern Europe during Middle Ages. Other uses of alcoves are for bookcases, cabinets and some dining areas.  (Mi)

AGE OF SATINWOOD

AGE OF SATINWOOD: Satinwood has warm yellow colour to it and has a close gran which takes a high polish. It’s mainly used as a veneer, however f not handled carefully it can easily split.

The age of Mahogany is specified as: 1765-1800.

AGE OF WALNUT

AGE OF WALNUT:  A division  of the woods used in furnitures during the prime English periods has been determined. After Oak, came the age of Walnut which is an attractive light brown wood witch dark patterns. Walnut was mainly used as thin veneers, glued to the body of the piece of furniture which was usually constructed out of pinewood or oak.

The age of Walnut is specified as: 1660-1720.

AGE OF MAHOGANY

AGE OF MAHOGANY: A division  of the woods used in furnitures during the prime English periods has been determined. Mahogany follows after the age of walnut and is a well known wood to most. It’s mostly recognized by it’s familiar “reddish-brown” wood. Mahogany is a very strong wood, and can be obtained in large pieces.

The age of Mahogany is specified as: 1720-1765.

AGE OF OAK

AGE OF OAK:  A Division of woods used in furnitures during the prime English periods has been determined. Oak is the traditional English wood and was mostly the only wood used to make furniture. Furniture made with Oak were made of solid wood, therefore resistant to decay and woodworm. 

Although the use of the woods ay overlap, the age of Oak is specified as: 1500-1660.  (Mi)

ACROTERIUM

THE ADAM BROTHERS



Robert (1728-1792) and James (1730-1794) Adam were the son’s of a leading Scottish architect. Robert Adam, after four years of studying in Italy, returned to London where he and his younger brother, James Adam established a practice. Robert, fascinated with the style of “Herculaneum”, made it his style and with the basis of his studies of Antiquity, and development of what is known as the “Adam Style” Become a successful and very fashionable architect in the country. The Adam brothers, believed that the details of a house, it’s design and furnishings must develop and grow from the same mind. They carried out this belief by employing cabinetmakers, artists, sculptors, etc., to execute out their designs. 

Their style was inspired from classical antiquity in the earlier works and there were influences of French, directly from Roman remains. Later on the forms and proportions accepted from Georgian furniture demanded lighter lines and delicacy in design. (Mi)

ACANTHUS


In architecture, leaves resembling those of the Acanthus plant are carved into stone or wood.Mostly the design is used in all classic Greek and Roman decorations, and it was the renaissance that revived the graceful designs after the stiff and spinydesign of the Romanesque and Byzantine. The Acanthus design is found in nearly every medium and every succeeding architectural style.
