Robert (1728-1792) and James (1730-1794) Adam were the son’s of a leading Scottish architect. Robert Adam, after four years of studying in Italy, returned to London where he and his younger brother, James Adam established a practice. Robert, fascinated with the style of “Herculaneum”, made it his style and with the basis of his studies of Antiquity, and development of what is known as the “Adam Style” Become a successful and very fashionable architect in the country. The Adam brothers, believed that the details of a house, it’s design and furnishings must develop and grow from the same mind. They carried out this belief by employing cabinetmakers, artists, sculptors, etc., to execute out their designs.

Their style was inspired from classical antiquity in the earlier works and there were influences of French, directly from Roman remains. Later on the forms and proportions accepted from Georgian furniture demanded lighter lines and delicacy in design. (Mi)
